The Ottawa River is no stranger to hosting world class events. The first World Cup is on the Ottawa in September of 2006. The World Championships were held at McCoy’s Chute in 1997.

The 2007 World Freestyle Kayak Championship is on Canada’s Ottawa River April 29-May 5, 2007. The preferred location is Mini-Bus, the river left wave at Bus Eater. Higher water will see us move to river right for Big Bus and further downstream for Gladiator.

MINI-BUS
The river left side of Bus Eater is Mini-Bus. This is the perfect location for World’s for a number on reasons. Entry is a stationary ski tow rope which enables paddlers to get back in without getting out of their boats. it’s a wonderful locationf for spectators with afternoon sun which is great for cold spring days.

BIG BUS
When Mini-Bus floods out, Big Bus loses some of its violence and offers great big wave boating. The drawback for boaters is a carry back up river to get back in. Spectators are in the shade and further from the action.

GLADIATOR
Located in the largest rapid on the Ottawa river (Coliseum), Gladiator is the next revolutionary wave. It was first surfed in any boat shorter than fourteen feet early this spring. A few of the locals and Wilderness Tours staff stumbled upon the mythical wave while out for a high-water river run. It became an instant number one on many kayakers’ favourite wave list. It had been rumored for years that a giant wave existed in Coliseum during near-peak flows. It has been described as being almost twice the size of the famous minibus further upstream. It has a huge, steep righty shoulder; going left is just as easy on the main face. This wave is wide, tall, fast, steep and green. It will give up some of the most lofty airs and jaw-dropping manoevers ever seen. A Worlds on this wave would truly change the world’s idea of kayaking.
