THE LATEST ON WATER LEVELS
Organizers very cautiously optimistic - Squirt to be held on Monday at McCoy Chute. Training at Bus Eater on Tuesday. Competition Wed - Fri Bus Eater or Smoothie.
Freestyle kayaking, like surfing and sailing, require help from mother nature. The Ottawa River watershed received little snow this winter. Inflows into Des Joachim (the big dam 100 km upstream pronounced locally as Swisha) were the lowest in 50 years. Outflows out of Des Joachim (which is our water) was in the 500 cms range (cubic meters per second). Adding to that is local river flow minus what is diverted into the generators at Bryson (other side of Calumet Isand) producing gauge levels about 9.

Both Ontario Hydro and Hydro-Quebc are supporting this event to the greatest extent possible. Ontario Hydro will bump up outflows from Des Joachim to almost 800 cms. That water will reach us Tuesday morning. Also, on Tuesday morning, Hydro-Quebec will open its big center gate at their control dam below McCoy Chute at 7 am and close it at 4 pm. This will bump water by another 130 cms.

With 800 cms from Des Joachim, 500 cms from local rivers and 130 cms from the center gate and we should have a gauge reading between 13 and 14 feet., maybe even a bit higher.

However, this has never been done before so we are not exactly sure how this will play out. By lunch time on Tuesday we will know exactly how much water we have. Hopefully, it will be enough for Bus Eater, if not, then over to Smoothie on the Middle Channel.
